Morrisey wins GOP West Virginia Senate primary

James Renacci clinched his nomination with the support of the president.

"Cocaine Mitch?" asked Noah, after playing a clip from Blankenship's ad.

Rupp said money may not be that much of a liability for Morrisey, who can expect a boost from outside groups to cut into Manchin's advantage in individual contributions, which were $3.1 million in the primary.

Mr. Donnelly is matched against Mike Braun, a wealthy businessman who ran as a political outsider, and who Republicans believe will serve as validation of Mr. Trump's policies and anti-Washington appeal. That has spurred them to wage an urgent campaign to hold the Senate to protect Trump and his agenda next year.

The economy is becoming more prominent as a voting issue, as Trump recedes somewhat. Braun ran in Trump's mold, deriding the "swamp" and using his more traditional opponents as foils.

Cordray handily defeated former U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who ran to his left on an anti-gun, pro-environment platform to finish a distant second in a six-candidate field. Eight years ago, the last time the state held a midterm Republican primary in a Senate race, 550,369 votes were cast.

Richard Ojeda won the Democratic nomination in West Virginia's third district Tuesday. One of those other incumbents, Rep. Robert Pittenger (D-N.C.), became the first member this year to lose his primary. With nearly all of the vote tallied, he trailed Mark Harris, a former Baptist pastor in Charlotte, and conceded the race.

President Donald Trump called Don Blankenship after pushing for the one-time candidate's loss in the West Virginia Republican Senate primary, Politico is reporting.

Rupp said lower voter turnout for a midterm primary could enable Blankenship to wrestle victory away from Jenkins and Morrisey. Todd Rokita and Luke Messer, in a costly primary race. All three fought over who was more supportive of Trump.

On behalf of the national Republican Party, Mountain Families PAC spent about $1.33 million advertising exclusively against Blankenship, reminding voters of his criminal history and water pollution caused by his mines. Female candidates were also big winners on Tuesday.

West Virginia was considered a Democratic stronghold during the 20th century. And while Renacci won his northeast OH base, he lost three of the nine counties - the ones along Lake Erie - that had switched from Obama to Trump.

But Blankenship wasn't the only #MAGA candidate to fall. But after Roy Moore's collapse in Alabama last December, party leaders didn't want to deal with Blankenship's baggage.

Incumbent Joe Manchin has won the Democratic Senate primary in West Virginia, easily defeating challenger Paula Jean Swearengin. There were opportunities Tuesday night for the more progressive wing of the party to flex its muscles, but it instead chose the pragmatic route. A spokeswoman said Morrisey was "emphatically" accepting the nomination.

The Don Blankenship comeback tour has come to a screeching halt. And Morrisey is the better man anyway.

Mitchell Eggleston of Charleston said he voted for Jenkins - as a means of stopping Blankenship. And I am proud to stand before you and celebrate the hardworking people who are the absolute backbone of America. There is no doubt that he was responsible for that mine accident.

Like anyone, he's got vulnerabilities, too - and lefty activists are already promising to tear into him - but I don't think they'd have picked Braun as their ideal opponent.

An adviser close to McConnell watched with glee as Blankenship called the race. She immigrated to the United States from Taiwan as a child.

We're trying to understand what message voters sent yesterday. "There's no race. Races are negro, white caucasian, Hispanic, Asian".

Beyond Mylan's drug-pricing scandals, Republicans have also sought to blame the company - and, by extension, Manchin - for the opioid crisis. Blankenship went after McConnell - and more pointedly, after McConnell's wife - because he knew that the Washington press corps would find that an irresistible narrative. Upon his release, he started to portray himself as the next Donald Trump, indeed as more Trump than Trump himself.

In other highly anticipated races, two candidates for the 3rd District have been chosen, with Democrats selecting state Sen. Republicans are vying to keep control of both chambers of Congress, even as Democrats have the public's favor in the generic ballot. Trump won IN by 19 points.

In another OH race, former Obama administration official Richard Cordray, who was head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, easily won the Democratic nomination for governor in Ohio. Mary Taylor, the lieutenant of the sitting Republican governor in OH, disavowed her own boss, John Kasich, an unabashed critic of the president.
