David Goodall's story forces us to confront uncomfortable truths

Speaking to reporters at a hotel near Spalentor Gate in Basel on Wednesday, Goodall stressed he was happy to have the chance to end his life in Switzerland but would have preferred to do so back home.

Goodall said he did not have a terminal illness and until recent years, he appeared to be in good health.

Generally, the assisted suicide laws provide that mentally competent, terminally ill adults can request a prescription medication from their cooperating physician that would hasten their death, according to the website Death with Dignity. "The message I would like to send is: Once one passes the age of 50 or 60, one should be free to decide for oneself, whether one wants to go on living or not".

Goodall was born in London in April 1914, he held high academic positions across the world, including America, United Kingdom and Australia.

The man arrived at euthanasia from Australia. He wished to have no funeral, remembrance service or ceremony, since he had "no belief in the afterlife".

Goodall - a respected botanist and ecologist with a speciality in arid shrublands - travelled to Europe from his home town of Perth earlier this month after being barred from seeking help to end his life in Australia.

Prof. Goodall was cleared by two Swiss doctors, including a psychiatrist who said he was of sound mind, to proceed with the "Swiss option".

Philip Nitschke, founder of right-to-die group Exit International, said Prof Goodall showed humour and a twinge of impatience in his final moments as formalities were tended to, uttering the last words: "This is taking a long time".

In the U.S., OR led the way in legalizing assisted suicide. David Goodall swallowed the lethal cocktail of chemicals at the Swiss clinic today. For years, Australia has banned such practices, but in November, the state of Victoria became the first to pass a euthanasia bill, which, by summer 2019, will allow terminally ill patients to end their lives.

"There are many things I would like to do, but it's too late.I'm content to leave them undone".

Lea said Goodall's decision could have a knock-on effect for others contemplating it.

The story of the academic, who is one of the first Australians to undertake the procedure due to old age rather than a terminal illness, attracted global headlines and further inflamed a highly divisive debate.
