If reports are to be believed, the mosque was also set on fire. Initially it was believed that all three victims had been killed.

The remaining two victims are still in a critical condition.

Three people have been left with serious injuries following an attack at the Imam Hussain Mosque in Ottawa, Verulam.

"The fire department is now on the scene clearing up, the fire been extinguished", he said.

Religious leaders said that this was the first time this particular mosque was attacked.

According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred on Thursday in the city of Durban, as three hoodlums were said to have slit the throats of three worshipers.

"The (imam) was tied up and thrown to his knees and his throat was slit".

Zev Krengel, the vice-president of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, said the organisation sent its thoughts and prayers to the victims of "this horrific attack" and the South African Muslim community. About 1.5% of the country's population is Muslim. A section of the mosque was set ablaze and smoke was billowing from the side of the building, Balram said.

"There have been theft and robbery incidents at mosques before, but not like this when nothing appears to have been taken".

Beukman said "everything" should be done to arrest the perpetrators and he called on anyone who has information about the attackers to contact the police.
