Red Sox and Yankees to clash in London

Regardless of the success of the MLB's foray to London, two more matches have already been slated for 2020 - potentially involving different teams - as Manfred continues his push to expand baseball's footprint beyond the confines of the US.

This has been the worst-kept secret in the world, but this morning Major League Baseball officially announced that the Yankees will meet the Red Sox in London for a two-game regular season series next year. "They are aware they'll be a part of history, but they also know these games count". Major League Baseball has gone to that well too many times.

The matches will be held on 29 and 30 June and will be the first Major League Baseball (MLB) games to be staged in Europe.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan launched the London Series alongside Red Sox owner John W Henry - who also owns Liverpool - and Yankees chief Hal Steinbrenner in London on Tuesday.

"Major League Baseball is excited to be bringing one of the most storied rivalries in sports to the passionate fans of London", said MLB commissioner Robert Manfred. There were significant challenges that had to be overcome.

Tony Clark, the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, said the games would feature some of the best players in the world.

London has oftentimes played host to middling or low-level teams for its NFL and NBA games, but MLB appears to be going all in by showcasing its premier rivalry in the form of the Yankees against the Red Sox. We could not be happier that Commissioner Manfred has been able to make this a reality. "I can't wait to hear someone shout "play ball" at London Stadium".

"We expect an exciting and intense pair of games and appreciate the significance of representing our sport in such a meaningful way".

The London Stadium was considered as a venue for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, but was not one of the 11 grounds named in April.

London already has a strong presence in both the National Football League and NBA.
