Killer loose after Air National Guard member stabbed in road rage incident

Lee's Summit Police Department told Newsweek that they are collecting surveillance footage, analyzing the crime scene and are continuing the investigation.

Harter was found collapsed in the inner median on 291 Highway near the Interstate 470 merger, after drivers reported a man stumbling in traffic around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cody Harter, 23, was found dead on the side of a highway after being stabbed.

"Hundreds of cars would have passed by and saw this or maybe this disturbance take place on 291 Highway or possibly saw the actual incident along 470", Lee's Summit Police Sgt. Chris Depue said.

According to police, initial witness reports indicated that two men were fighting beside the road, outside their vehicles.

Around 7:30 p.m., police were dispatched to the area on a report of a man stumbling in traffic.

The suspect fled north on I-470.

A 23-year-old St. Joseph man died after being stabbed on a Kansas City-area highway in what appears to be an incident of road rage, police said Sunday. "He only had one semester left until he graduated with an engineering technology degree".

Pictured is Harter's actual truck - a maroon 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, extended cab Z71 edition. "He called his mom on the way home and said, 'I love you".

Harter also possessed a lawn care business and has been a fervent dirt motorcycle racer.

Harter's father said the last thing his son said to them before he died was that he was coming home.

The family made a heart wrenching plea to urge any witness who may have seen what happened to come forward to help track down the alleged killer.

"If you saw anything, even if you think it as nothing - please call", Kerrie Harter said. Let's find who did this senseless act, so that you're not sitting here when it's your child. Please call to put the pieces together.

"[Harter] brought us great joy".

Anyone who wishes to reach out with a tip about the suspect responsible for Harter's death can call TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or 816-474-8477. "He was my love... and now we know pain and loss".
