Alfie Evans: Sick toddler 'breathing' as life support ends, father says

Protesters have clashed with police outside the Alder Hey hospital where terminally-ill baby Alfie Evans is now being treated.

The father of Alfie Evans, a seriously ill toddler at the heart of a much publicised United Kingdom court battle over his condition, has said his son's life support has been turned off. He has been given oxygen and hydration at Alder Hey hospital.

Mr Evans told journalists that after life-support was withdrawn, Alfie continued breathing and doctors agreed to give him oxygen and water.

Facebook / Save Alfie EvansHis father, Tom, said Alfie was breathing unassisted after his ventilation was removed.

Speaking through a translator, Evans said he had come to see the pope in Rome so he could share his suffering. He said he was losing his colour and his fingers were turning blue.

'He is still working, he's doing as good as he can, ' he told reporters.

A "last-ditch appeal" by the Italian ambassador and the Pope, to grant Alfie citizenship of Italy to take him for treatment at a hospital in Rome, failed on Monday.

"Foreign Ministers Angelino Alfano and Interior Minister Marco Minniti granted naturalization to little Alfie". If there is anything at all that can be done, may the Lord enable us by His love and grace to effect it.

Mr Justice Hayden said flying Alfie to a foreign hospital would be wrong and pointless.

British High Court judge Justice Anthony Hayden ruled in February that the medical evidence provided supported the hospital's decision as further treatment was "futile", while recognising the "terrible reality" of Alfie's "profoundly unfair" case, as the BBC reported.

The parents have subsequently lost several challenges to this decision. A large group then attempted to storm the entrance before being blocked by police.

The parents of 23-month-old toddler Alfie Evans have said that his life support has been withdrawn despite Italy granting him an emergency citizenship in hopes of delaying that action.

Paul Diamond, who will represent the parents this afternoon, will argue that it can not be in Alfie's best interests to be left to die in Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

"No-one knows why. But that it has happened and is continuing to happen can not be denied".

But she said Alfie continued to breathe independently. "It also means that there is no hope of his ever getting better".

The Alder Hey hospital said in a statement on Tuesday they won't be issuing any updates as to their patient's condition, citing respect for the toddler and his family's privacy.

'Our Emergency Department is still open, however only attend if you have an accident or emergency that requires urgent care. "If it is not an emergency, please attend your local GP or visit your walk-in centre".
