Avoid Eating Romaine Lettuce After E. Coli Outbreak, Says CDC

For now, the CDC warns against eating or buying any romaine lettuce unless it's possible to confirm that it did not come from the Yuma growing region.

Media reports indicate Safeway had pulled romaine lettuce from shelves in OR and replaced it with safe product.

The CDC has the full details on the outbreak warning here.

On Tuesday 66-year-old New Jersey woman Louise Fraser sued Panera Bread for allegedly eating contaminated lettuce at one of their restaurants, forcing her to be hospitalized for two weeks.

Over the past week, over 50 people have gotten sick from an E-coli outbreak that has been connected to romaine lettuce.

"Based on new information from Alaska, CDC is expanding its warning to cover all types of romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region", the CDC said in its update.

The CDC reported 12 cases in Pennsylvania and 10 cases in Idaho.

Thus far there have been no reported deaths, according to the CDC's numbers, but at least 53 people in 16 states have been infected, including 31 who've been hospitalized.

Symptoms of this strain of E. coli include severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, which is often bloody, officials said.

To keep yourself and your family safe, the CDC recommends avoiding any romaine lettuce products that could be contaminated. According to the Alaska Department of Health, the state's eight E. coli cases were among inmates at the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center in Nome. The most susceptible to the illness are young children, the elderly, and immune-compromised people.

The different ways that romaine lettuce is harvested could make identifying the specific origin of contamination more hard, Marler said.

Consumers who have store-bought romaine at home, including salads and salad mixes containing that lettuce, should throw it away immediately, US health officials said - even if some had already been eaten with no ill effects.

The CDC says restaurants and retailers also should not serve or sell any romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

Ask your suppliers about the source of your romaine lettuce.

California is 1 of 16 states involved in the E. coli outbreak.
