Washoe Schools Ready for Another Round of Walkouts

Junior Kaylee Tyner, who helped organize a walkout at the school on March 14, said the anniversary is a day to remember those lost in the shooting and those they left behind and politicizing it could divide the community.

Students are walking out of schools to protest inaction from lawmakers against gun violence.

The group wants to ensure the gun-reform movement initiated by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teens remains student-led and active.

Friday is also the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado.

Based on the number who have signed up through a website, Murdock is estimating this event could draw almost 2 million participants.

The April 20 walkout has sparked more than 2,000 other planned protests, ABC News reported last week.

These student organizers have gotten help from a national nonprofit called Indivisible, a group that says it aims to "fuel" young people to "resist the Trump agenda". The students will need to hold their protest before the school day starts.

Nationwide, students from nearly 3,000 schools marked the event by leaving their classrooms at 10 a.m. local times to show solidarity for the Parkland, Fla., school shooting victims.

-Sara Au, spokeswoman for Orange County Public Schools " Student walk-outs happened at numerous Osceola middle and high schools in the weeks after the terrible tragedy in South Florida, with no effect to students who peacefully assembled. Places like Niskayuna are sending parents a letter letting them know that if students do walk out they'll be marked absent for the day.

Kaylee Tyner, a 16-year-old sophomore at Columbine High School, shows the words painted on the back of her jean jacket.

His sentiment echoes that of Carroll County Superintendent Stephen Guthrie, who told Brett Hollander on Tuesday he anxious that the discussion of school violence has become overly divisive.

Most of the students weren't alive when the Columbine shooting happened.

When asked how effective various measures would be at preventing school shootings, 86% of teens say that prohibiting people with mental illnesses from purchasing guns and improving mental health screening and treatment would be effective.

Additionally, we teach every student the concepts of social and emotional learning and through this we are creating better school climates and reducing bullying.

Former Stoneman Douglas student Nikolas Cruz, 19, is accused of taking an assault-style rifle to the school and opening fire on students, teachers and staff on February 14. "It is just about making sure our children don't get harmed in school and we don't live in a community and in a country that has institutionalized fear", Murdock says. He's a survivor of the Columbine shooting, and for years has fought for legislation that would allow teachers and school staff to be armed.

Students have worked closely with district officials to orchestrate the event, as well as other schools planning similar rallies, he said.
