Syria chemical weapons visit postponed after gunfire

The inspectors arrived in Damascus on Saturday, when Britain, France and the United States launched military strikes against what they said were targets linked to Syria's chemical weapons program.

The OPCW inspectors are in Syria to investigate a suspected gas attack, which took place on April 7 in Douma.

"As we have made clear, the United States agrees with the U.K.'s assessment that Russian Federation is responsible for this use of chemical weapons on U.K. soil - either through deliberate use or through its failure to declare and secure its stocks of this nerve agent", it said. Russian Federation later said that OPCW inspectors would be permitted to enter the city on Wednesday. But it said no missiles landed inside the bases. The OPCW inspectors have not yet been able to visit the site, and Uzumcu did not say when they would deploy. Next time, if there is a next time, the USA and its allies should respond more severely.

What is happening in Syria?

Moscow warned soon after the Saturday missile strikes against their repercussions, saying the tripartite raids targeted the terrorism-riddled country's chance for a peaceful future.

The U.S., the United Kingdom and France hit the Assad regime in Syria with missile strikes last week in response to a suspected poison gas attack that killed more than 70 civilians.

The experts from the OPCW chemical watchdog are awaiting the green light from the security team before beginning their on-site investigation in Douma of the alleged attack. They are expected to gather soil and other samples to help identify the substances - if any - used in an attack.

Kenneth Ward, US ambassador to the OPCW, raised fears that Syria's ally Russian Federation may have sent soldiers to hide evidence after at least 40 people including children died. 'I can guarantee that Russian Federation has not tampered with the site, ' he told the broadcaster.

But US officials familiar with US military planning said Russian Federation and Iran were never seriously considered as targets.

"In other words, using the pause after a strike like that to try to clean up the evidence before the investigation team gets in".

Two bombs filled with chemicals were reportedly dropped several hours apart on the town.

"In the liberated areas of Eastern Ghouta, Syrian government troops have found containers with chlorine - the most terrible kind of chemical weapons - from Germany, and also smoke grenades produced - please pay attention [to this] - in the city of Salisbury, the UK", Zakharova told a news conference in Moscow on Thursday. The French government agreed it was "highly likely" they had done so.

How did the air strikes happen?

As his speech came to a close, the first reports of explosions in Damascus began to emerge. But House lawmakers emerging from their own all-members briefing in a secure facility in the Capitol building said administration officials focused on their legal justifications for launching the airstrikes, and for the targets.

The U.S. says available intelligence indicates that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons in Douma - probably chlorine gas and possibly sarin, as well.
