But Metz said that the motivation was more to protect Prince's privacy and that there was no evidence that Schulenberg gave the star fentanyl.

Carver County, Minnesota Attorney Mark Metz will update the public today on the legal status of Prince's death. She also said her client did not prescribe opiates to anyone with the intention of them being given to Prince. "However, we have no direct evidence a specific person provided the Fentanyl to Prince", Metz explained.

A toxicology report from Prince's autopsy shows he had "an exceedingly high" concentration of Fentanyl in his body when he died on April 21, 2016.

Schulenberg's attorney statement also declares: "The United States Attorneys' Office for the District of Minnesota has confirmed that he is not a target in any criminal inquiry and there have been no allegations made by the Government that Dr. Schulenberg had any role in Prince's death". Authorities say Schulenberg prescribed oxycodone for Prince, again under Johnson's name.

Associates at Paisley Park told investigators that Prince had been "going through withdrawals, which are believed to be the result of the abuse of prescription medication", according to an affidavit unsealed in state court a year ago. Metz said, importantly, that law enforcement was not able to determine how the counterfeit Vicodin was obtained, which was key to the decision to bring forth no charges.

Michael Schulenberg, agreed to pay a $30,000 fine after admitting he knew painkillers he prescribed to Prince's drummer would be used by Prince.

Prince died on April 21, 2016 at the age of 57 after taking counterfeit Vicodin, which was laced with fentanyl - a synthetic opioid that can be lethal in very small doses.

On Thursday federal authorities did announce they had reached a settlement with Dr. Schulenberg in connection to that illegal prescription.

But the U.S. Attorney's Office said Schulenberg wrote the prescription for Johnson "knowing that the controlled substances were meant to be used by another individual".

The settlement comes as state prosecutors are planning to announce whether anyone will be charged in the two-year investigation into Prince's death. It is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

The news that the famously clean-living Prince had died of a drug overdose was a shock to the music world, to his fans, neighbors and family.

Police do not suspect Schulenberg provided the fentanyl that led to Prince's demise at his Paisley Park complex outside of Minneapolis.
