Jeff Bezos says 100 million people have signed up for Amazon Prime

The ranks of people subscribing to Amazon.com Inc's Prime service for speedy delivery of purchases and streamed television has topped 100 million, chief executive officer Jeff Bezos said on Wednesday in an annual letter. The subscriptions at Prime, was launched 13 years ago and it was an achievement from 2017 shared by Bezos in the letter, a copy of which was filed with United States securities regulators.

In India, Amazon Prime membership was launched at a price of Rs 499, which was increased to Rs 999 a year later. We further detail how Amazon's other revenue streams are expected to grow, per Trefis estimates.

Bezos added that the data to highlight Amazon's performance was sourced from website ranking company comScore and digital market intelligence firm SimilarWeb.

Bezos did not provide a precise figure, but the total number of Amazon Music subscribers is likely to be substantially less than Spotify's 70 million or Apple Music's 36 million. Amazon Music Unlimited, the on-demand, ad-free offering, expanded to more than 30 new countries in 2017, and membership has more than doubled over the past six months, according to Bezos. "I see that cycle of improvement happening at a faster rate than ever before" as Jeff Bezos write in the letter.

Bezos has issued the annual letter to shareholders since 1997.

Amazon boasts more than 560,000 employees and reported a profit a year ago of slightly more than US$3 billion. He also said that "We think that the monthly membership option appeals to the later Prime adopters, with a smaller, potentially temporary commitment, that ultimately yields a long-term commitment".

Bezos has always been a little cagey about sharing Amazon statistics. The letter opens up some of the values and key points that make Amazon what it is today - a success story. But it also gets Amazon into trouble with both brands and shoppers over counterfeits and plainly inappropriate products. "High standards are contagious". That included a story about a friend who hired a handstand coach in order to ideal a handstand lasting for more than a few seconds, to illustrate that "unrealistic beliefs on scope - often hidden and undiscussed - kill high standards". An American entertainment company, Netflix reached 125 million subscribers worldwide, charge around $120 for its video-streaming service.
