Golden Boy Promotions Issues Statement on Canelo Alvarez

As expected, Canelo Alvarez has been suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for two failed drug tests.

Alvarez withdrew from his May 5 rematch with Golovkin due to the failed drug test, but the middleweight has insisted the positive results were caused by contaminated meat he ate while training in Mexico.

Golovkin called him a liar and implied he had always been a doper and accused him even further, stating he was doping during their first bout as well.

After much trial and tribulation, unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin has finally got an opponent for May 5th.

In two samples taken on February 17 and 20, the Mexican tested positive for Clenbuterol. Loeffler acknowledged the letter from the IBF and told ESPN that Golovkin plans to fight May 5 and said their side will seek an exception, adding that he hopes the IBF will grant one. The red-headed fighter is one of the most recognizable athletes in Mexico and one of the country's biggest sports heroes.

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 knockouts) and Alvarez fought to a draw last September, and the rematch was the most anticipated bout of the year. "I do believe in my heart I'm going to beat (Golovkin) because he's never fought someone with my style".

Canelo Alvarez has been handed a six-month suspension for testing positive for banned substance Clenbuterol. "When they asked me if I'd take this fight, I said yes. Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions respect the rules of Nevada and are therefore satisfied with the settlement agreement reached today", Golden Boy Promotions said in a statement issued after the meeting. "He is ready to continue his remarkable record of fighting at the highest level". "Alvarez denies intentionally taking clenbuterol or any other substances prohibited by the commission".
