Thousands of protesters shut down Armenia's capital, dozens injured in clashes

Forty-six people have been hospitalized following clashes between people protesting against the nomination of Serzh Sargsyan for Armenian prime minister and police in downtown Yerevan.

About 60 protesters have been detained and charged by the police, with several dozen people requiring medical treatment - including Mr Pashinyan.

"I call on all of the population of Yerevan and other towns and cities in Armenia to take to the streets tomorrow (Tuesday), block the main axes, and start a strike", Nikol Pashinian told a rally.

Thousands of Armenian protesters clashed with riot police in the capital city Yerevan on April 16.

"Such actions can lead to crimes against the citizens' life, health and property", police said in a statement.

One of the organizers of the protests, MP Nikol Pashinyan was also injured who soon recovered and returned from the hospital.

The police went on to warn the demonstrators to disperse or face a further use of force.

Many in the crowd of protesters said Pashinian's call for the demonstrations to remain nonviolent helped convince them to join in. Serzh Sargsyan, who held the office for almost a decade, had promised he wouldn't seek the key job of prime minister.

Serzh Sargsyan was nominated by the Republican Party of Armenia and ARF Dashnakustyun.

He is expected to be elected by parliament on Tuesday.

Several hundred people sat or lay down on pavements on Monday, blocking roads leading to the parliament building and universities.

Rallies began on Friday with more than four thousand taking part.

Ahead of the vote, Sarkisian blamed the opposition for rocking the boat.

As a result, presidential veto powers were stripped from the president and the post was downgraded to a figurehead position elected by parliament every seven years rather than by a direct popular vote. Pashinian said the unprecedented disruption marked a "breakthrough" in Civil Contract's campaign against Sarkisian's continued rule which he claims would lead to Armenia's "Azerbaijanization", a reference to the long authoritarian rule of Azerbaijan's current and former presidents.
