Jose Mourinho insists that Manchester City's efforts over the course of the campaign should be recognised as the reason for their Premier League title win, not Manchester United's loss to West Brom on Sunday.

But Jay Rodriguez's close-range header earned the league's bottom side a famous 1-0 win at Old Trafford, handing the title to City.

The Red Devils came into this match off the back of five successive league victories - including last weekend's epic 3-2 win over City at the Etihad Stadium - but they were poor from start to finish against the Baggies.

"It was a bad reaction after the City victory, the effect of that is complicated football", Mourinho said.

In situations such as these - with United being second in the table - Ferguson may have trusted his players to play with more freedom and blow West Brom away, which begs the question of whether Mourinho has the same faith in his squad to deliver.

The West Brom fans didn't miss a chance to make light of the situation on a day of disappointment for the home side.

Because of our win, City will no longer have the earliest title win, most points accumulated or a double over Manchester United.

Mourinho greeted West Brom caretaker manager Darren Moore with a warm hug after the two teams had made their way onto the pitch. Everything was slow, everything was one more touch, one more flick, one more trick, one more turn, ball lost and no continuity or fluidity in our football.

But Jay Rodriguez's goal in the 73rd minute gave West Brom a glimmer of hope as they are now nine points off safety with 12 to play for. "You have to be consistent, not just one wonder season", Giggs said.

"I'm proud for players and staff and way they have acquitted themselves today.

I don't think we deserved to lose but we gave them the opportunity to win the match by being solid in defence and smelling a chance in a set-play which they did". "You could see the difference in the attitude to players compared to last week", said the Portuguese coach. "Don't say City won the title because United did not win, it is not fair on them", he said.

In the past five seasons no side has picked up more points at Old Trafford than West Brom, who have taken 10 over that period.

"Eight titles are eight titles and three Premier Leagues are three Premier Leagues".
