United States, United Kingdom, and France launch strikes against Syria

The strikes were carried out by manned aircraft and from ships that launched cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea.

The ministry said that the missiles were downed by the Arab Republic's air defenses as they approached their targets. Several explosions were heard in the Eastern and Southern parts of the capital of Damascus.

Trump said the operation would be conducted in cooperation with the militaries of France and Britain.

If the red line banning the use of chemical weapons was crossed again, there would be another intervention, he said, while adding: "I think the lesson will have been learnt".

President Donald Trump on Saturday praised the United States military, the UK, and France for the operation.

Defense Secretary James Mattis called the "atrocities inexcusable".

"Establishing this deterrent is a vital national security interest of the United States".

Asked if the strikes had also been a warning to Russian Federation, the PM said: "The action that took place last night was an action which was focused on degrading and deterring the operational capability and the willingness of the Syrian regime to continue to use chemical weapons".

"As always, we oppose the use of force in worldwide relations and call for respect for other countries' sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity", a spokesperson for the Chinese government said. "We have sent a clear message to Assad and his murderous lieutenants". She said she had authorised British action after intelligence showed Assad's government was to blame for gassing the Damascus suburb of Douma a week ago. "Hopefully, someday we'll get along with Russian Federation, and maybe even Iran - but maybe not", he said.

The New York Times earlier reported that Trump's announcement would deal with Syria.

Trump also called out Russia's promise in 2013 that they would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons. "These are not the actions of a man; they are crimes of a monster instead", he said.

The WHO, citing reports from health partners on the ground, also said that about 500 people went to the hospital showing signs of exposure to "toxic chemicals" in Douma.

This attack comes after six days of threats by the Americans and President Donald Trump in particular, that there would be forceful retaliation in response to a chemical weapons attack in Douma on the outskirts of Damascus.

Pence is filling in for Trump at the Summit of the Americas in Lima. "As other nations step up their contributions we look forward to the day we can bring our warriors home".

"I urge all Member States to show restraint in these risky circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate the situation and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people", he said.

And he described the Middle East as a "troubled place". "But the fate of the region lies in the hands of its own people".

This post will be updated as more information is learned about Trump's announcement on Syria.

"Assad's recent attack and today's response are the direct result of Russia's failure to keep that promise".
