Spain join France, Croatia in semis after epic Ferrer win

Nadal was swiftly back in the swing of things in Valencia, dismantling Kohlschreiber after Alexander Zverev blew away David Ferrer 6-4 6-2 6-2 to put Germany in front.

Two breaks in each set were enough for Nadal to seal an impressively comfortable victory over world number four Zverev in what was only the 31-year-old's second outing since returning from a hip injury.

Ferrer and Kohlschreiber's match was locked at one set each at the Plaza de Toros in Valencia on Sunday.

Spain and Germany's tie was the only to go the distance, largely due to the surprising doubles win for Jan-Lennard Struff and Tim Puetz over Feliciano Lopez and Mark Lopez.

Nadal and the local crowd erupted in celebration when the 33rd-ranked Ferrer successfully served for the match after breaking Kohlschreiber's serve in the previous game. The match that they both played was unbelievable. Germany also won the doubles match on Saturday.

After 4 hours and 51 minutes of epic battle, Ferer prevailed 7-6 (1) 3-6 7-6 (4) 4-6 7-5 to earn one of his most vivid wins ever and send his country into the semi-final for the first time since 2012.

The United States are at home to Belgium in Nashville in the other quarterfinal, with John Isner due to take on Joris de Loore in the opening singles rubber at 21.00 GMT.

The US were the only team to progress without losing a rubber, after Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison's doubles win over Belgian debutants Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen on Saturday.

Croatia, the 2005 champions, got off to a winning start against Kazakhstan in Varazdin when world No 3 Marin Cilic outclassed Dmitry Popko, the world No 258, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. "It's always special to play in these arenas", added Nadal, who has played in four of Spain's five Davis Cup-winning teams.

France, the 10-time winners, have two top 30 players in Lucas Pouille, ranked at 11, and Adrian Mannarino, the world 25 although it was world number 80 Jeremy Chardy and not Mannarino who was given the nod to face Fabio Fognini. France will host the winners of the tie between Spain and Germany, from 14-16 September, for a place in the Davis Cup final.
