Jack Nicklaus says grandson's hole-in-one at Masters means 'everything'

Jack Nicklaus says grandson's hole-in-one at Masters means 'everything'

Nicklaus' grandson, G.T., aced the ninth hole in the Par-3 Contest on Wednesday afternoon, making good on his grandfather's prediction from a few days ago.

Eight-time major champion Watson became the oldest Masters Par-3 Contest victor at age 68, capturing the casual competition at Augusta National on the eve of the 82nd Masters which starts on Thursday.

The family friendly, 9-hole exhibition on Augusta National's scenic par-3 course saw Watson, Nicklaus and Gary Player dazzle with an array of birdies, only to be outdone by Gary Nicklaus Jr.

"He's never made a hole-in-one, it's his first hole-in-one".

"He's learning how to play golf and I think he learned pretty well here".

The par-3 contest is one of the highlights of the week at Augusta National Golf Club, a chance for the players to enjoy the sumptuous surroundings and to have a little fun before the competition begins in earnest on Thursday.

Nicklaus, 78, also thrilled the packed galleries by going four under, while 82-year-old Player was two under in an exhilarating showing by the former lions of the game.

"But watching your grandson do something special, I have a few tears", said 18-time Major victor Nicklaus.

In an interview with broadcaster Jimmy Roberts, golf legend Jack Nicklaus recalled watching Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson play ping pong at the President's Cup.

Watson, who is 68, won the Par-3 at 6-under. To have your grandson make his first hole-in-one on this stage. WOW!

"Since I'm not playing in the tournament, I thought, 'Let's go for it this year, '" Watson said afterward. To have that happen is unbelievable.

Finau dislocated his left ankle celebrating a hole-in-one during the Par-3 Tournament on Wednesday and then popped it back into place. "All of a sudden, we're kind of wrapping up the first day, and I've been taking pictures with different people, and I look at my right arm, and there's two big grease stains on it".

"What I did doesn't make any difference to me", he told ESPN.
