This will give us a good idea of which sectors have the highest and lowest gender pay gaps, and will help single out individual companies that are doing particularly badly. According to its data, 99% of women and 99% of men received bonuses in the 12 months prior to its reporting date, with women's average bonuses said to be 11% higher than men's.

If a company fails to meet tonight's deadline, the regulator will kick off a 98-day process of letter writing and investigations.

The submissions have made for uncomfortable reading for company executives. While depressingly predictable, the database also shows that the wage difference between men and women is even more significant in the gaming industry.

The news won't come as a surprise to anyone inside the music industry, but confirmation that men hold the majority of senior posts at all three major labels in the United Kingdom - and take home considerably more pay than their female colleagues - still makes for depressing reading.

In total, 8% said they had no pay gap between men and women.

This why it is saddening to see such a big discrepancy in pay in the public sector.

In banking and finance, bonus gaps of more than 60% were not uncommon; academy school chains were shown to have some of the worst gender pay gaps in the United Kingdom, while in female-dominated workforces such as retail, gender pay gaps were as high as 50%. The disclosure prompted the news organization's high-profile China editor, Carrie Gracie, to resign from her post in protest at what she called the "secretive and illegal" pay culture at the publicly funded broadcaster.

Some efforts predate the new rules, but have come into focus because of the requirements.

There's been something of an uproar over the lack of women in more senior - and thus well-compensated - positions.

Supporters of the British regulations acknowledge that transparency alone won't solve the problem.

No agency has achieved complete gender pay parity.

There has been some criticism of the method as a way of measuring pay disparity because it does not break down comparable roles, age, experience or time taken off work.

Such is the case in Iceland. United Kingdom -run banks like HSBC and Barclays reported women earned a mean hourly rate of 59% and 48%, respectively, less than their male counterparts. The thinking was that unless equal pay laws were applied more forcefully, the imbalance might never close.

Labour MP Stella Creasy has launched a #PayMeToo movement with other MPs (BSE: MPSLTD.BO - news) to advise women on closing the gender pay gap.

The Icelandic initiative sought to address chronic hurdles that block women around the world from higher-paying positions. Although men and women are by law required to be paid the same for the same job, there are differences in the hierarchy of the workplace, where men often dominate management.

Elsewhere, developer Sumo Digital reported another large pay disparity, with women earning around 66p for every £1 a male colleague makes.

The United States, by contrast, has taken a step backward on reporting.

It comes after ITN was revealed to have the highest bonus pay gap between men and women of any United Kingdom news media organisation, with a mean gap of 77.2 per cent and a median gap of 50 per cent.

They cover only about a third of all companies.
