The companies have to disclose the mean and median gaps between hourly wages for a male and female employer.

Despite no pay inequality issues, the report highlighted how the difference in pay by gender is largely driven by the proportion of males to females in more senior positions - an issue that Highfield and the board have said will be reduced every year.

In another - Abellio Scotrail - the difference in median hourly pay is 27.2 per cent. The figure is above that of rival HBoS, which sits at 26.4 per cent.

The remarks came as a deadline approached for British companies to publish data on their pay gap.

Seventy-eight per cent showed a pay gap in favour of men.

According to the figures women's mean hourly rate is 36% lower than men's. While 42% of the company is comprised of women, those in leadership roles is a low 16%.

The NWLC has requested documents under the Freedom of Information Act that they say would give them more insight as to why the proposed policy was halted in the first place, says Emily Martin, general counsel and Vice President for Education and Workplace Justice at the National Women's Law Center.

Alison Wilde is a director of business mentoring firm Birdsoup, which is helping to deliver the We Can mentoring scheme for young businesswomen in Norfolk. "We're committed to making the right changes and working towards closing this gap". However, the mean pay gap is 22.7% and the bonus gap is 45% (mean) - but just 0.2% based on a median measure.

While the ruling Conservative Party is not legally required to take part given it has too few employees, it has revealed that on average it pays its female staff more than its men.

Some companies with large gaps have said they pay women and men in similar jobs the same amount.

Sony Music Entertainment International has not made a submission, suggesting it does not reach the required staffing threshold.

The Office for National Statistics, which has been studying pay since 1997, has attributed the exponential rise in the gender pay gap for over 40s to women taking career breaks for childcare. This is the most precious thing we have in our life and yet we will pay a plumber, £35 ($49) an hour to mend the boiler. Apple, Stoke City Football Club, Fashion retailers Coast and Phase Eight, the airlines EasyJet (ESYJY) and Virgin Atlantic, and banks including HSBC (HBCYF), Goldman Sachs (GS) and JP Morgan (JPM) are some companies which have larger pay gaps.
