Apple is working on new touchless controls for its displays

The screen curvature is reported to bend inward gradually from top to bottom, unlike Samsung phones which curve on the screen's left and right edges. According to a new report, Apple is now working on curved iPhone displays which may arrive in a couple of years. Judging by the description of the display, the phone is likely to have a rather large screen and an OLED panel, given that only OLEDs can curve easily.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. You'll need to get pretty close to the screen, though, because the gestures rely on technology built into the display itself.

"Both features are still in the early research and development stage and Apple could choose to not go forward with the enhancements", Bloomberg notes.

The work comes as the Cupertino, California-based smartphone pioneer looks to make its gadgets stand out.

The differences between smartphones are becoming more and more minute, so the innovations could help Apple further separate its device from the pack.

In the fourth quarter, Apple was responsible for about 20 percent of smartphone shipments following the launch of the iPhone X and iPhone 8, beating out second place Samsung and Huawei, according to IDC. For example, the Moto Actions feature enables users to turn the lock screen on and off by waving a hand, among other things. Google has its own take on the tech, secretly experimenting with it within an initiative called Project Soli. One source told Bloomberg Technology that the unique technology would let users perform some tasks on their iPhone without really touching its display.
