Synthetic Marijuana Situation In Illinois Kills 2, Number Of Cases Still Growing

Health officials in IL are warning people about mock marijuana that is spreading across Chicago and the central part of the state, causing severe bleeding among users and, in some cases, death.

The Department of Public Health reports that 20 of the 38 people in the state who smoked a bad batch of synthetic marijuana live in Peoria, Tazewell, or McLean Counties. She noted that out of everyone tested, nine tested positive for an anticoagulant called brodifacoum, often used in rat poison. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) issued a statement on March 27, warning people that hundreds of chemicals could be included in the drug. In the last few weeks, 56 people in IL have reported severe bleeding, coughing up blood, blood in the urine or other signs of hemorrhaging. At least 56 people were hospitalized and identified as having symptoms related to the fake marijuana.

Synthetic cannabinoids - also commonly referred to as Spice, K2 or fake weed - are found in convenience stores, gas stations, drug paraphernalia shops and novelty stores, and are purchased online.

'Despite the perception that synthetic cannabinoids are safe and a legal alternative to marijuana, many are illegal and can cause severe illness, ' Dr Nirav Shah, IDPH director, said.

The number of cases continues to rise as state health officials struggle to identify the source and chemical makeup of the contaminated synthetic pot. Two other cases are under investigation.

During that time, physicians treated 456 patients total for synthetic cannabinoid intoxications.

Illinois State Police and Chicago Police allegedly traced several of the cases to King Mini Mart in Lawndale, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Since 2015 hundreds of people across the U.S. have overdosed and been hospitalized after smoking too much or bad batches of synthetic cannabis.

Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made, mind-altering chemicals that are sprayed on to dried plant material.

The store workers - Fouad Masoud, 48, Jad Allah, 44, and Adil Khan Mohammed, 44 - were charged on Monday after undercover federal agents said the men sold them synthetic marijuana, known as K2, according to a criminal complaint.

One study of a synthetic cannabinoid found that it was 85 times as potent as tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the mind-altering chemical in marijuana.
