First ever Qantas direct flight from Perth to successfully lands

"From today it will be the first link between Australia and Europe that has ever occurred non-stop in aviation", he told reporters at a launch event.

Flying from Australia to London in 1935 took 12 1/2 days.

Qantas said it is able to reduce the time of the 9,000 mile (14,498km) flight by eliminating stopovers and picking paths based on the best winds for efficiency and speed.

After United Airlines started non-stop Singapore-Los Angeles flights last October, average ticket prices on one-stop rivals fell by 15 percent relative to 2016, according to Expedia Inc data provided to Reuters.

At 14,498km, QF9 is the third longest commercial flight now in operation.

The Premier of Western Australia, Mark McGowan, tweeted on arrival in London: "A new era of travel and opportunities for Western Australia's economy has officially begun".

Australia hopes the direct routes will boost tourism. Doha to Auckland with Qatar Airlines and LA to Singapore are longer, at 18 hours and 20 minutes and 17 hours, 55 minutes respectively.

Flight Centre sells more than 1.3 million tickets to Australia every year.

Irishman Alan Joyce, the chief executive of Qantas, was onboard the flight.

The inaugural service, Qantas flight QF9, was operated by the airline's latest Boeing 787-9 which is adorned with special Indigenous artwork created by Balarinji (VH-ZND).

"We've recently announced the reconfiguration of the A380, there will be many elements of that which will be aligned with the Dreamliner so it means that we know that we've done things that are working well with customers and now we are going to continue to roll those our across the rest of the worldwide fleet".

Qantas 9 (QF9) touched down at Terminal Three at 5.03am London time, just over 17 hours after setting off from Perth at 7pm on Saturday.

The average business-class ticket from Hong Kong to NY on non-stop flights with Cathay and United costs $8,600, compared with $7,200 on one-stop options, according to Carlson Wagonlit data, with Qantas achieving a $1,600 premium to rivals on Perth-London flights.

If it is possible, Qantas will call for tenders next year, with the aircraft likely to be ready by 2022.

Convenience is also expected to be a drawcard, given passengers fly to Perth then embark on their long-haul journey from the same airport.
