Some iPhone users have had quite a shock lately, as a bug has been causing the device's voice assistant, Siri, to read out hidden lock screen notifications to nearly anyone that asks. The privacy bug uncovered by a Brazilian publication Mac Magazine finds that Siri is able to read the content of most messages even though the content itself is not visible on the lock screen.
One of the more clever security features of the iPhone X is that messages and other notifications on the lock screen can only be viewed in their entirety when a person's face is authorized via Face ID.
Ironically, the Apple Messages app seems to be somewhat immune from the bug because you need to say "Ok Siri read my messages".
As we have mentioned earlier, Apple has acknowledged the issue and is working on a fix which will be released in the form of an iOS update.
"We are aware of the issue and it will be addressed in an upcoming software update", Apple said in a statement provided to MacRumors on Thursday.
If you use a feature baked into iOS 11 that lets you hide messages, you might be disappointed to learn that Siri isn't so good at keeping that content hidden.
A recently discovered security flaw shows that Siri will still read your hidden notifications aloud even if your phone is locked. If in case you want to keep the notification on the lock screen, you can disable Siri when you lock your device.
With iOS 11.3 thought to be imminent, Apple may chose to bundle in the fix.
Another workaround for the iOS bug requires you to completely disable Siri whenever your iPhone is locked. Apple has not given any comment on this issue.
