Google's Instant Games lets you try Android titles before you buy

Right now there's only a handful of titles supporting Google Play Instant, and that sounds like the way things are going to be for a while; Google describes the current state of dev access to the feature as a closed beta, but invites interested parties to register for updates on the tool as it approaches broader availability. The main advantage of these Instant games, though, is that users can try the game without having to install anything.

However the first new service from Google on display at the talks was actually regarding the Google Play store - and, though whilst not expressly related to immersive applications, it certainly has the capacity to affect any AR app or virtual reality (VR) product for Google's head mounted displays (HMDs) - the Google Cardboard and Google Daydream.

The results can be pretty impressive. These apps now also have a "Try it Now" button on their store listings to let Android users know the feature is available. In February, we noticed that it was starting to roll out to other devices by means of the Google photo application and today, that's extending to everyone else. Several of which you may have already seen on VRFocus today and more of which can no doubt be expected throughout the week ahead. They have since expanded instant apps, but this is the first time they are bringing games into the fold. Early tests show a 4 to 15 percent increase in full game app installs, Karmel said. Now the games selection is limited, featuring just a handful of games as the service is now in Beta mode for developers.

At GDC, Google is also updating the Play Console with a new internal testing track "to quickly test and iterate on new games and features". Google also said game developers would be able to use customized renderings and other data from Maps inside games. We're thrilled to announce that instant apps is now available for games. While the interface here is slightly different, you're once again just one tap away from launching the game of your choice-no install needed.

It is limited to the aforementioned developers right now, but Google plans to offer it to more soon.
