Trump visits California first time as president

President Donald Trump has inspected several proposed models for a border wall to separate the United States and Mexico.

After viewing the wall prototypes in an area of the border heavily cordoned off and far from the rallies on the U.S. side, Trump was then expected to address Marines in San Diego before attending a high-dollar fundraiser in Los Angeles, where he'll stay overnight.

"We absolutely want President Trump to feel welcome and to come inspect the prototypes so we can get the wall built", he said.

"I think Governor Brown's done a very poor job running California. And by the way, if I get $25 billion for the wall, you're going to have a lot of change".

The Republican brought a tough message on immigration to California during his first visit as USA president to the heavily Democratic state that has served as a base of resistance to many of his policies.

Regarding cooperation with Mexico, President Trump said "both countries recognize the need to stem the cross border flow of illegal weapons, drugs, people, and cash".

Speaking in San Diego Tuesday, the president said a southern border wall will save the country hundreds of millions of dollars.

During his visit, Mr Trump took aim at so-called "sanctuary cities" in California - local governments that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials seeking to deport illegal immigrants.

Indeed, Trump's maiden presidential visit to California is largely focused on the immigration matter.

Trump's visit comes after Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week sued California over three of its so-called sanctuary laws.

On the other side of the border, a small group of anti-Trump protesters vented their frustration, and announced plans to boycott United States businesses over the frontier. "Yet California's leaders are in open defiance of federal law", Trump said.

President Donald Trump says there may someday be a "space force" fighting alongside the Air Force, Army and other branches of the military.

And MaysLandingMel said: 'If @realDonaldTrump puts up a see-through wall and someone on Mexico's side cover's it with paint, is it still a see-through wall?' "You have sanctuary cities where you have criminals living in sanctuary cities, and then the mayor of Oakland goes out and notifies when ICE is going in to pick them up", he said.

"We had people trying to scale", he said.

He renewed complaints that Los Angeles, San Francisco and other major cities are providing protection for illegal immigrants who have committed crimes. Trump made no mention of his outgoing secretary of state.

San Diego's City Council a year ago passed a resolution opposing Trump's proposed wall.

Ahead of his arrival, the president tweeted that "thousands of unsafe, violent criminal aliens are released" as a result of California's immigration sanctuary policies. Jerry Brown, who said the Trump administration was "full of liars" and the lawsuit was akin to an "an act of war".

Trump has long said he wanted to visit the models himself so he can pick a victor, though the Department of Homeland Security says elements of each design are expected to be used.

"It's not good", said Mauricio Villegas, 37, glancing toward the fence and prototype walls as he passed through on his way to a job at a veterinary office.
