Nagaland: PDA to form government soon, NPF still seeks BJP support

Senior Naga People's Front leader TR Zeliang submitted his resignation letter to the governor on Tuesday, backing NDPP's Neiphiu Rio as the new chief minister of Nagaland, putting an end to speculation of an impending constitutional crisis.

"We are in a comfortable position to form the government and the NDPP-BJP alliance will stake claim to form the government soon", BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said. The majority mark is 31 in the 60-member Assembly.

On Saturday, the ruling NPF and its allies won 30 seats; and the People's Democratic Alliance (PDA), comprising the BJP and the NDPP, had secured 29 seats.

BJP leader and NEDA Chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma has today announced that an NDPP-led Government would be formed in Nagaland and newly elected NDPP Legislature Party leader Neiphiu Rio would be their Chief Minister. Will the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance be voted to power?

Chuba Ozukum, president of the Naga Hoho, the apex tribal body, said a strong opposition could mean a stable government, which, he added, was necessary for the peace process.

There was no room for a second rung in the NPF as long as Mr. Rio held control.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), in alliance with the BJP, has taken over the reins of the north-eastern state, following the recently-concluded Assembly election, with the support of 32 MLAs.

Chief Minister T R Zeliang of the NPF is leading over his nearest NDPP rival Iherie Ndang by over 4500 votes from Peren constituency. "There is no question of going back to NPF in forming the government", he said while talking to media persons after meeting former MP and chief ministerial candidate Neiphiu Rio.

NPF emerged as the single largest party in the elections, winning 26 seats.

The NPF on Monday said it had submitted pre-poll alliance letters with National People's Party (NPP) and JD (U) as its allies to the governor.

Stating that the party is very new in Nagaland, the NPP leader said "We are at least that we managed to win 2 seats in the state considering the fact that NPP is still very new here".
