Carnival brawl: Over 20 people kicked off cruise ship for violent fight

Passengers said a mass fight started on board the Carnival Legend ship after one man stepped on another man's flip flop.

David Barkho says his son phoned and begged him to call authorities after he suffered a head injury while on the ship, which was due to berth in Melbourne on Saturday.

"He rang me about 1am this morning and said, "please dad, please dad, call the federal police", Mr Barkho told the radio station.

Footage of Friday's brawl shows security officials kicking at passengers grappling on the ground amid screams. She also said members of the family were involved in other incidents during the cruise, but declined to elaborate.

It's believed days of fighting on board the Carnival Cruise Line ship preceded the brawl and Friday's unscheduled stop to offload the family at Eden on NSW's south coast.

Passenger Kellie Petersen, who was on the cruise with her husband and their three children, aged 11, 9 and 6, said trouble on board had been "brewing for days".

Blood cascades from injured passenger George Barko's head.

One horrified holidaymaker told Nine News they are genuinely frightened of the offending guests and are hesitant to leave the safety of their room.

Vision taken by a passenger has surfaced online of a brawl that broke out in a restaurant area on the ship.

One passenger claims that violence has erupted on several occasions with threats made to stab and throw people overboard.

Some intending passengers are now contacting Carnival Cruise Line asking for refunds for future trips, saying they are concerned about safety.

Nobody could have guessed that a relaxing ten-day South Pacific cruise along the picturesque shores of southeastern Australian would have led to complete disaster.

"Disembarking a family from a cruise in an unprecedented incident, it is always our last resort and therefore we felt it was the best course of action for the safety and security of our guests and crew", She said.

"The ship's highly-trained security staff have taken strong action in relation to a small group of disruptive guests who have been involved in altercations on board", a statement said.
