Austria's David Gleirscher wins shocking gold in men's singles luge

Chris Mazdzer celebrates winning the silver medal in the luge men's singles at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChnang 2018 on February 11, 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Halfway through the four-round event, Mazdzer was in fourth place, with a total time of 1:35.517 - just one one-thousandth of a second behind Roman Repilov, Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation, but it would have been enough to keep him off the medal stand.

Austria's David Gleirscher struggled to make the Olympic team, but is now the men's luge gold medalist.

However, his teammate Chris Mazdzer won the silver medal, becoming the first US male luge athlete to win a singles medal in the Olympics. He scorched the course, with the single best run by anyone in the competition and setting a course record, finishing in a time of 47.534 seconds, to move into second place.

Heading into the fourth and final run, he was in the right state of mind. But the 22-year-old Ridgefielder finished 37th in the third run with a time of 49.593 and dropped to 26th in the overall standings. Mazdzer had previously never finished better than 13th at the winter Olympics.

German Felix Loch, who has won three consecutive gold medals, was in first in the last run but hit the wall and ended up fifth. The bronze went to Johannes Ludwig of Germany.

Mazdzer won silver in the men's luge finals. Loch had appeared well on his way to earning his third Olympic gold medal in a row - but a disastrous final run unraveled his bid for a three-peat, knocking him not only out of the top spot but also off the podium entirely.

Men's luge finals air Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on NBC Sports Network and in primetime on NBC.

The highest the USA men had ever placed in the Olympics was fourth in 2002 (Adam Heidt) and 2006 (Tony Benshoof).
