Two soldiers, terrorists killed as fidayeen storm army camp in Jammu

Heavily armed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists on Saturday struck at an army camp in Jammu, killing two personnel and injuring nine others including a major, almost 15 months after the Jammu region was hit by a similar attack.

He said so far a JCO and an NCO, both from Jammu and Kashmir have been martyred and nine others, including five women and children, injured. The Army said it has found a flag of "Mohammed Afzal Guru Brigade" of Jaish from the slain terrorist. The Army in a media briefing in the evening confirmed that two terrorists have been killed in the counter-operations. "In the early hours today after a brief exchange of fire with sentry on the periphery, some terrorists entered the family accommodation complex", he said.

Declaring its support for the government and the Army, the Congress urged the prime minister to personally supervise the anti-terror operation so that the security forces could give a befitting response to its sponsor Pakistan.

What made the lapse glaring is the fact that the attack took place in Jammu, considered relatively safer than the Kashmir Valley where militants find safe passage and shelter among sympathisers to their cause.

Two Indian soldiers and two attackers were killed Saturday in a firefight after gunmen attacked a military base in the Jammu region of Indian-occupied Kashmir. The schools in the close vicinity were closed down and traffic was diverted to the bypass road by the local authorities.

They said the army was conducting the operation and the Jammu and Kashmir police were not involved.

The attack follows intelligence inputs warning of an attack on the Army or the security establishment by JeM in view of the death anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was hanged on February 9, 2013.

Army helicopters and drones have been pressed to service recce the area, officials said. The officials said that the family quarters were located at the rear side of the Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to the Chief of the Police and took stock of the situation arising out of the terror attack on an in Jammu.

The operation will continue till all the militants part of the fidayeen attack are apprehended or killed, he added.

Earlier, the state police informed that three security personnel and a civilian suffered injuries in the attack.
