PM in UAE after visits to Jordan, Palestine

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shaking hands with Palestine's President Mahmoud Abbas at Ramallah.

Such a framework would ostensibly replace Washington's long-standing monopoly as mediator.

Modi and his entourage flew in by helicopter from Jordan, landing near Abbas's Ramallah headquarters, an AFP reporter said.

Abbas has appealed to the worldwide community, including countries in Europe and the Arab world, to demand a say in future negotiations, but has so far failed to secure commitments.

The Prime Minister received a ceremonial reception as he reached Abu Dhabi, the second leg of his three-nation tour.

India has been continuously supporting the Palestinian cause at various global foram.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has lit its iconic buildings from Friday night ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. The mausoleum was unveiled on November 10, 2007 and is located adjacent to the Palestinian Presidential compound, also known as Muqata'a here. Abbas said the formation of a multi-lateral mechanism that is produced by an worldwide peace convention is the most ideal way to broker negotiations with Israel, which is India's strategic partner and among its top arms suppliers. "We want East Jerusalem to be the capital of the Palestinian state".

"We never have and never will reject negotiations", said Abbas. "The formation of a multilateral mechanism that stems or is produced by worldwide peace convention is the most ideal way to broker such negotiations", he said.

"We count on India, an worldwide force on a strategic and economic level, to help Palestinians achieve a just peace in our region", Abbas said at the press conference.

Israel staunchly opposes any worldwide framework for negotiations, arguing that only the US can be a fair broker. Trump's decision to declare as Israel's capital angered the Palestinians, sparked protests in the and raised concern that it could further destabilise the region.

Modi came to Ramallah via Jordan as New Delhi sought to emphasize that it wants its relations with Palestinians and Israel to be mutually independent and exclusive, or in the words of India's foreign ministry officials, "de-hyphenated". An MoU between Government of Jammu and Kashmir and DP World was also signed to establish multi-modal logistics park and hub in Jammu comprising warehouses and specialised storage solutions.

In UAE, PM Modi will have bilateral talks with His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, on Saturday evening, followed by a signing ceremony of agreements and MoUs and a banquet hosted by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed in honour of Modi.

Earlier Saturday, he visited Palestine in what was the first ever prime ministerial visit from India there.
