Israel launches attacks in Syria following jet's crash

Syria responded with "substantial Syrian antiaircraft fire" under which two Israeli pilots ejected from their F-16, which crashed inside Israel, according to the Israeli military. It said Iran's presence in Syria is limited to advisers.

Russia's Foreign Ministry also called for "restraint" from all parties, adding it was "unacceptable to create threats to the lives and security of Russian soldiers" in Syria. Adrian Rankine-Galloway said the United States shares "the concerns of many throughout the region that Iran's destabilizing activities threaten worldwide peace and security, and we seek greater global resolve in countering Iran's malign activities".

But both Israel and Syria signalled they were not seeking wider conflict, even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rushed to military headquarters in Tel Aviv for consultations and the pro-Assad alliance pledged a strong response to any Israeli "terrorist action". After that, Israel delivered a heavy strike against Syrian air defense and Iranian facilities in Syria, hitting twelve targets in the neighboring country, Israel's Defense Forces said.

In his conversation with Putin - with whom he met last week in Moscow - Netanyahu said he reiterated Israel's "right and obligation" to defend itself against attacks emanating from Syrian territory.

Israeli then launched airstrikes on a dozen Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria, including on the control center that launched the UVA.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said in order "to cover their crimes in the region, Israeli officials are resorting to lies against other countries". It comes as Israel claims to have downed an Iranian drone over its territory.

Iran's expanding clout during Syria's almost seven-year-long war, including deployments of Iran-backed forces near the Golan frontier, has raised alarm in Israel, which has said it would act against any threat from its regional arch-enemy Tehran.

Iran's actions have proven correct all of Israel's warnings against allowing Iran's establishment in Syria.

Al Jazeera's Zena Khodr, reporting from Beirut in Lebanon, said Saturday's confrontation showed Syria and its allies were no longer willing to tolerate Israeli attacks inside the country.

As the Israeli planes came under attack, two F-16 pilots chose to eject, and their plane crashed in Israel's Galilee region, Conricus said. At one of these bases, Khmeimim Air Base, not far from the Mediterranean shore, is the Russian command bunker for its forces in Syria, which has a direct line of communication with the Israeli high command.

He said the Israeli military is ready for various scenarios and will continue to act according to the situation. If Israel does become more engaged in the fighting next door, it could have serious consequences for the war in Syria war - and for the region as a whole.

The Israeli military in the response of the event struck targets in Syria.
