Rob Porter allegations describe 'incredibly common' traits of abusers

The White House is embroiled in an explosive domestic scandal, with critics demanding to know how a top aide accused of domestic abuse could work there for a year despite failing to qualify for a security clearance.

Porter, who as White House Staff Secretary controlled access to the president and the flow of information into the Oval Office, resigned Wednesday after his two ex-wives went public with multiple allegations of domestic violence.

According to reports, he told congressional Democrats that the president was "uninformed" during the campaign when he promised a physical barrier spanning the entirety of the Southern border paid for by Mexico.

In an emotional interview Thursday, Jennie Willoughby, an ex-wife of Rob Porter, said the former-White House aide had asked her to downplay allegations of abuse she made past year on her Instagram account and in a blog post. Porter was denied a final security clearance, who at the White House was aware of this information, and how Mr.

The story in Washington continues to snowball, as new questions arise about when administration officials learned of the abuse allegations. "You know, saddened for all the individuals involved", White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah told reporters. It also raises the question of who else in the White House knew, including the president himself.

In her CNN interview, Willoughby explained that she had stood by her piece since it was published past year, including in the days leading up to the scandal.

Porter has denied the allegations. Willoughby alerted investigators September 22 that she had received a call from Porter the previous day, demanding to know whether she had used the word "violent" with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to describe his behavior.

On Thursday, amid the growing controversy, Shah said Porter had cleaned out his desk that morning and would not be back. "His pathetic defense of staff secretary Rob Porter reveals his true nature - an enabler of sexual abusers, a betrayer of trust and an avoider of responsibility". He said, "what are you going to tell them?" Meanwhile, a photo of Holderness, with a black eye she says she got when Porter hit her, has been circulated.

"What that clearly says to me is that the president is one of those people who either automatically disbelieves women and believes men, or arguably even worse, believes the woman who makes the allegations but thinks that should not be a barrier to her abuser's success", said Martin.

Kelly's statement came after several news outlets reported the chief of staff had known about the allegations against Porter for some time and sought to keep him in his job anyway.

On Thursday, Willoughby also alleged Porter asked her to "downplay" a blog post entitled "Why I stayed" that she made on the same subject on April 24, 2017, "asking me to emphasize more the relationship that he and I have now as opposed to what I experienced in our marriage". She's said in interviews that she was afraid enough of Porter to call the police to their home, and that by three years into their marriage she felt like "a shell of a person". She also said his departure from the White House was not imminent.

Willoughby took out a temporary protective order in 2010, which according to the Post said that "reasonable grounds exist to believe that [Porter] has committed family abuse and there is probable danger of a further such offense". Shah added that Kelly retained the president's confidence.

A White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss personnel matters publicly, said Friday that Kelly had not offered to resign.
