Kashmir Valley witnesses shutdown on Afzal Guru death anniversary

Security forces are on a high alert in Jammu and Kashmir's on the death anniversaries of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on February 9 and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) co-founder Maqbool Bhat on February 11.

Security was tightened and restrictions imposed in Guru's home town, Sopore.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed in Srinagar city while as public transport was also off the roads. The cops fired tear smoke shells and resorted to baton charge to disperse the protestors.

Authorities imposed restrictions in old city areas of Srinagar, the uptown area of Maisuma and in some north and south Kashmir areas.

The authorities disallowed prayers at the Jamia Masjid. Reports suggest that no commuter is being allowed without a proper check by the forces.

In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown is being observed on Friday to mark the fifth martyrdom anniversary of Kashmiri leader, Muhammad Afzal Guru.




Train services were suspended for the day due to security reasons, an official said. In a statement, the JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik said, "A human was secretly put to gallows on petty pretext of satisfying the collective conscience of people, without giving him a last chance to meet his family and handing over his corpse to them for last rites". He was arrested on Wednesday.

Most of the separatist leaders had either been kept under house arrest to thwart protests.

Police also raided residence of Dukhtarn-e-Millat chairperson Asiya Andrabi.

A group of JKLF activists took out a protest rally at Abi Guzar area and staged a protest. The JKLF will also pass a memorandum in every mosque across Kashmir demanding the mortal remains of Guru and Bhat.

Hurriyat Conference said that they sacrificed their precious lives for the better future of the nation.
