Media Paints Potential Military Parade as Logistical Nightmare

Trump has asked the Pentagon to plan a grand parade of the USA armed forces in Washington this year to celebrate military strength, officials said Tuesday. The president "asked the Department of Defense to explore a celebration" where "Americans can show their appreciation", said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Trump, known for his unpredictable nature and making "over-the-top" diplomatic and political decisions, surprised the world when a Washington Post report on Tuesday said that the US President gave "marching orders" as a grand gesture to the US military.

According to the Post, Trump was inspired by a Bastille Day parade he saw in France and has requested one just like it.

"This is being worked at the highest levels of the military", a Pentagon insider told The Washington Post.

Trump apparently got the idea from the French, after attending the Bastille Day parade last summer in Paris.

The July 14 military parade has been seen as an opportunity for France's armed forces to present themselves to the French people.

US President Donald Trump has sent his officials scrambling after demanding a giant military parade. A gaudy spectacle that shines the main spotlight on U.S. military equipment and tries to prove America has the biggest missiles will only dilute that honor - and backfire. Military planners are looking at dates and locations for the parade, as well as costs, logistics and whether it is feasible to hold a parade displaying large weaponry such as tanks on Pennsylvania Avenue, a defense official told CNN.

The United States hasn't had a military themed parade since the end of the Gulf War in 1991.

Officials have yet to decide on a date for the parade, the Post reported, though Veterans Day on November 11 is now a strong contender.

Yes, but nothing quite says "a vibrant and lively democracy" like watching an M-1A2 Abrams Battle Tank rumbling down the street.

The Louisiana Republican joins a growing number of lawmakers who have scoffed at Trump's plan to throw a parade honoring the US military, which he has instructed the Pentagon to begin planning. "And I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France".

The Washington, D.C. City Council - which is dominated by Democrats - mocked the idea of the city hosting a parade featuring military hardware. And the event would likely cost millions of dollars, with no clear plan on how it would be paid for.

"I don't mind having a parade honoring the service and sacrifice of our military members", Sen.
