Joker Movie Aiming to Cast Joaquin Phoenix

Academy Award victor Jared Leto, who played the Joker in 2016's Suicide Squad and will reprise the role in a sequel and a spinoff alongside Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, was reportedly upset with Warner Bros. for seeking out other Jokers.

Joaquin Phoenix is apparently in talks to play the Joker in a standalone movie helmed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips. And with that unlikely idea comes an unlikely casting fantasy in actor Joaquin Phoenix. Initial reports indicated that Phillips movie would be executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

So to summarize, we are getting at least three separate film projects from Warner Bros. and DC about the Joker.

Phillips is directing and co-writing, reportedly met with Phoenix before the new year and has been waiting for the greenlight from WB. The film will take place in the same shared universe as other movies starring DC Comics characters, but will be set much earlier.

The role would not be connected with the current DC Extended Universe.

The studio will allow interesting storytellers to plop these iconic characters into bold settings employing unique genres.

Leonardio DiCaprio was reportedly considered for the role before Phillips approached Phoenix.

That makes the entire concept of a Joker origin film a bit easier to swallow, and since Batman's most famous and enduring nemesis has had perhaps the widest variety of takes of any superhero comic book character ever, it's not hard to see how it could work. He was also in talks for Disney-Marvel's "Doctor Strange", but passed on that as well.

Of all the Caped Crusader's enemies through the years, the Joker is by far the most well-known.
