South Africa: Zuma Launches State Capture Inquiry

South Africa: Zuma Launches State Capture Inquiry

President Jacob Zuma's statement on Tuesday, Jan. 9 2018 says "this matter can not wait any longer" and that any further delay will make the public doubt the government's revolve to fight graft.

Zuma said that he appealed the cost order and the order regarding the duties of the president to appoint commissions of inquiry in terms of section 84 of the Constitution.

South African President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday he will set up a commission of inquiry into allegations of influence-peddling, after a 2016 anti-graft report called for a judge to investigate any corruption in his government.

He said he made this decision after the investigation and remedial action of the Public Protector and the order by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on December 14 past year.

In his statement Zuma has relinquished the power to Mogoeng who he says has selected Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, who was appointed in June past year following the retirement of Dikgang Moseneke.

A scandal erupted after documents leaked to the South African press previous year revealed the close ties between his family and the secretive, well-connected Gupta's, who numerous allegations revolve around.

Finally, we welcome this as an important victory of the EFF as champions of the Zupta Must Fall campaign which has been challenging the capture of the state by the Gupta family as business partners of Zuma.

ANC insiders say this ace played by Zuma could weaken any attempts to oust him at Wednesday's NEC sitting, where it is rumoured that he will make an appearance.

The Guptas relocated to South Africa from India in 1993 and have allegedly used their vast wealth to wield influence over the government.

According to Saxby, "in saying "there should be no area of corruption and culprit that should be spared the extent of this commission of inquiry", Zuma appears to have left the door open to an all-encompassing inquiry that could stretch back to corruption in the apartheid era".

Zuma had, until now, been reluctant to appoint the commission on the basis that he wanted the courts to clarity certain aspects of Madonsela's ruling he was not happy with.

"I am concerned that this matter has occupied the public mind for some time now and deserves urgent attention", Zuma said in a statement.

On December 13, the Pretoria High Court held that Zuma must personally pay the costs of his bid to block the release of then Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's report on state capture in 2016.

"It is my honest hope that the commission will able to reach many of those areas of concern that may have been reached".

ANCWL said the commission would expose corruption in both the private and public sectors.
