Transparency shines with Trump's immigration meet, Fusion GPS transcript release

Glenn Simpson, the founder of research firm Fusion GPS - who commissioned former MI6 officer Christopher Steele to compile the dossier - testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee in August. Chuck Grassley, declined to.

The transcript is likely to provide Democrats a counterargument to the Republican charges that the dossier was a political document paid for by Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Feinstein released the testimony after the panel's Republican chairman, Charles Grassley, on Friday called for a criminal investigation into former British spy Christopher Steele, who was working for Fusion GPS when he compiled a "dossier" of allegations of financial and personal links between Trump, his advisers and Russian Federation.

Simpson also said Steele severed his contacts with the FBI before the election following disclosures that the bureau's inquiry had found no connection between Trump campaign and Russian Federation and concerns that it was being "manipulated for political ends by the Trump people". The New York Times reported last month that Papadopoulos told the diplomat that Russian Federation had thousands of emails that would embarrass Clinton and that the Australians' subsequent tip to the FBI about the conversation helped persuade the bureau to investigate potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Feinstein said she released the transcript to set the record straight.

Simpson told the committee in closed-door testimony made public on Tuesday that no one had encouraged him and he did not seek anyone's approval when ex-British intelligence agent Christopher Steele, the author of the dossier, went to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in July 2016.

"The American people deserve the facts", Sen.

"Fusion GPS commends Sen".

Last week Simpson, a former journalist, requested that the committee release the transcript in an op-ed in the New York Times, writing: "the public still has much to learn about a man with the most troubling business past of any United States president".

Hampered early on by partisan disagreement about the scope of its investigation, the committee has interviewed top witnesses including Donald Trump Jr and has taken a particular focus on the firing of James Comey.

In a statement, Feinstein said that she released Simpson's testimony after conferring with her fellow committee Democrats. He is referring to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is also investigating the Russian meddling. Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas told reporters that the release was a "good idea" and that transparency is important as they work to understand the impact of the dossier.

Simpson's testimony, however, was not accurate, according to a person close to Fusion.

Democrats on the committee said they were not consulted ahead of the Republicans' referral to the Department of Justice. That decision marks the most serious break yet in the cooperative relationship she has had with the Republican chairman of the committee, Sen.

He also disputed Republican charges that his firm is linked to Democrats, saying the firm takes clients from both sides of the aisle.
