Kawhi Leonard Dealing With Partial Tear in Left Shoulder

Leonard has only played in eight games this season, having returned on December 12 but having been held out of four of the Spurs' past 10 games, as the team has tried to manage his recovery.

The Spurs took an extra cautious route with Kawhi Leonard's return and have maintained that path upon his return.

It's been an injury-riddled stretch for San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard, from an ankle issue that ended his season during last year's playoffs to a quad injury that delayed his 2017-18 season debut until December 12. Going into Sunday's game against the Trail Blazers, the Silver and Black were only two losses behind the Houston Rockets in the standings and only five behind the NBA-best Golden State Warriors.

Leonard is being held out of Sunday's game against the Blazers, and Popovich confirmed to the media that the forward suffered a partial tear during Friday's game against Phoenix.

"I don't think it will be a while", Gregg Popovich said.

Leonard was ruled out of Sunday night's game at Portland, and the Spurs plan to evaluate Leonard over the next couple of days of its current road trip. "It depends on how his shoulder goes".

Leonard missed a huge chunk of the season due to a quadriceps injury and he has only appeared in eight games since he returned to the court.

"It's disappointing. We need him", veteran Manu Ginobili said.

The two-time National Basketball Association (NBA) Defensive Player of the Year award victor is averaging 15.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.8 steals and a block in under 23 minutes a game this season.
