Pierce County cop dead after confrontation with burglary suspects

A police officer was shot and killed in response to a report of home intrusion in an area about 23 kilometers away from Tacoma in Washington state on the US west coast, the state's Pierce County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) said Monday.

A Pierce County Sheriff Department deputy died early Monday morning after being shot by an apparent burglar he was trying to catch in the Frederickson area. He was transported to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, where he died.

"All of us are deeply concerned", Sheriff Paul Pastor said.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department identified the deputy as Daniel McCartney, 34. According to the sheriff's office, the deputy responded to a 911 call during which dispatchers could hear screaming and some type of altercation. During the ensuing chase, police believe, at least one of the suspects fired shots.

The Sheriff's office says 33 year old Daniel McCartney was a three-year veteran with the Sheriff's office and a Navy Veteran.

"Deputy Daniel A. McCartney was serving and protecting his community, responding to a burglary call when the suspects reportedly opened fire and murdered him".

The suspect fled the area on foot and a massive manhunt is underway.

When other law enforcement officers arrived, they found one of the suspects dead of a gunshot wound.

Deputies are doing a K-9 track in the area and have closed Canyon Road at 176th Street South all the way to the end of the road.

Bethel School District canceled all classes for Monday out of "an abundance of caution", it reported on its Facebook page.

No additional information about the home invasion has been released.
