Hundreds protest in Europe, US in solidarity with Iranian uprising

Russian Federation portrayed the Security Council meeting as a US attempt to violate Iran's sovereignty.

"Rolling Protests in Iran Lay Bare Power Struggle" (front page, January 3) reports on protesters venting their frustrations with a political elite they say has hijacked the economy to serve its own interests.

But Rana believes Pakistan is self sufficient when it comes to major counter-terrorism operations and the security of its border with Afghanistan. The U.S. called the United Nations meeting on Friday, portraying the protests as a human rights issue that could spill over into an worldwide problem. U.S. President Donald Trump cheered on protesters, calling Iran a "brutal and corrupt regime", while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "wish [ed] the Iranian people success in their noble quest for freedom".

Amid the unrest and anti-government rallies that began last week, Iran has also seen three days of pro-government demonstrations, with crowds in the tens of thousands.

Echoing Iran's concern that the demonstrations were fueled by outside powers to promote regime change, Bolivia reminded world powers that "unilateral action, political interventionism, and regime change only ever lead to devastating humanitarian, social and economic consequences".

"The Iranian regime is now on notice: the world will be watching what you do", Haley told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Iran.

The Netherlands hoped the meeting would "work as a preventive measure to avoid further escalation of violence", Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom said.

While Russia believes the UN Security Council has no business getting involved, British ambassador Matthew Rycroft said it was "right and proper - indeed, our responsibility to assess whether a situation like this could become a threat to worldwide peace and security". "We must be wary of any attempts to exploit this crisis for personal ends, which would have the diametrically opposed outcome to that which is wished".

The British envoy was addressing the United Nations Security Council session which had been held at the request of the United States to discuss recent unrests in some parts of Iran. The CIA declined to comment. "Another FP [foreign policy] blunder for the Trump administration".

Iran signed a nuclear deal with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China in 2015, easing sanctions in exchange for curbs to the country's nuclear programme.
