Computers on U.S. airports went down for two hours: Agency

Already reporters and travellers at airports have posted on social media about the mayhem causing massive delays.

An outage affecting the Customs and Border Protection's computer systems left worldwide travelers waiting in long lines at airports throughout the country Monday night.

The technological failure was caused by an apparent computer outage affecting passport control, with travelers reporting that kiosk machines at customs were not working.

"Just landed back in the United States and I'm stuck in the customs line because the border patrol servers are down nationwide", wrote Pearse Adams. According to CBP, the outage began at 7:30 p.m. and ended at approximately 9:30 p.m. All airports are now back online. At this time, there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature. CBP officers continued to process worldwide travelers using alternative procedures at affected airports.

The agency reported that it still had access to national security-related databases during the disruption, and all travelers were screened according to security standards.

"Travelers at some ports of entry experienced longer than usual wait times as CBP officers processed travelers as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest levels of security", spokeswoman Yolanda Choates said in a statement.

Even modern systems such as the Amadeus Altea are prone to random failures, the website says.
