January brings a Blue Moon, a Supermoon and a total lunar eclipse

There will also be a total lunar eclipse that day as well, although for us in OH, we should not see the total part of that eclipse before the moon sets.

Nichols-Yehling says a supermoon appears 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter. Those in our area will see the first Supermoon of 2018 early Monday morning then again Monday night into Tuesday morning. The video starts tonight, January 1, at around 6 p.m. or 7 p.m.

And because the heavenly orb will turn a reddish/orange color, which makes it look like the moon is rusting, a total lunar eclipse is often called a blood moon. For example in US Mountain time (MST), the eclipse will begin at 4:48 AM, but as the full eclipse winds down, the moon will already be dipping below the horizon.

Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon's perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth.

The moon will technically be considered 100 percent full a 9:24 p.m. The last one occurred on December 3. But it will occur very late, when the moon is close to the earth's horizon. Here's another supermoon live stream you can view below, provided by Virtual Telescope. That means skywatchers will see the moon about 14% largers and about 30% brighter than a regular moon.

As the moon orbits the Earth every month, there is a point in every cycle where the moon is closest (perigee) and a point where it's farthest away (apogee).

Speaking to mid-day, Arvind Paranjpye, director, Nehru Planetarium, said, "The moon reached its perigee at 3.34 am on January 2, its distance from the Earth 3,56,565 km and it 99.9 per cent illuminated".

The good news... you will not have to wait long at all.

Check out the Roseland Observatory's handy guide to seeing the supermoon at its best below. To take a photo, fit your camera with a telephoto lens and lengthen the shutter time and increase the sensitivity (ISO) to compensate for the lower nighttime light.
