Israel responds with raids to Gaza rockets

A spokesman for Hamas said it didn't fire the rockets but had erected the sign.

According to Aljezera, there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Three rockets were launched around noon on Friday from Gaza into Israel's southern border communities with two intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported.

Witnesses said Israeli tanks shelled a position controlled by Hamas in the east of Gaza city.

A spokesperson for the Sha'ar HaNegev municipality, bordering the Gaza Strip, stated that a third rocket hit one of the Gaza border communities.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack on a kibbutz near the Gaza border with Israel.

Rocket-warning sirens began shortly after midday in the Sha'ar Hanegev and Sdot Negev regions, alerting residents to take shelter, the Israeli army said on Twitter.

The Times of Israel website speculated that it was created to coincide with a ceremony marking the 24th birthday of an Israeli army soldier, Oron Shaul, who was killed in 2014 and whose remains are reportedly being held by Hamas.

The rockets on Friday were the first to be sent since December 18 where a two-week barrage shook Southern Israel.

United States President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital has prompted global criticism and sparked protests across the world. Twelve Palestinians have died in the violence so far.
