Very cold and blustery through Tuesday; Friday snow risk fades some

Skies will undergo gradual clearing into this afternoon and evening with daytime highs topping off in the 40s to low 50s across the Piedmont and 30s in the mountains.

Temperatures barely rebound during the afternoon with highs in the 20s to lower 30s Wednesday. Lows will be in the teens and 20s. If you are towards southeastern Kentucky, most of your day has been under mostly cloudy skies with cold temperatures. Temperatures as of the Noon hour were steady in the mid-20s, but with the wind it was feeling more like the teens and even single digits. Unfortunately, this will be the warmest day of the next seven.

The week's snow chances: The latest model trends since Saturday have not been kind for those hoping for a winter storm this week.

The deep freeze continues as we head into January. It is possible that the New Year's Eve/New Year's Day system could combine a clipper-type system from Canada with some energy farther south for a fairly winter event, but this would probably reach its max somewhere north of us.

Wednesday will feature a slight chance for rain showers early in the morning across areas like Anson, Union, and Richmond counties. Temperatures will still remain cool on Tuesday with highs in the mid 20s. My current low temperature forecast is 7°, so that could be a close call as well.

We will track the colder air and all the snow details tonight on WYMT. The last time we had a stretch longer than a week of temperatures below 32 was back in February of 2014 when we had 9 days in a row (this one could be worse if our forecast verifies, with the magnitude of the cold).
