India police kill Kashmir 'Merchant of Death'

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said that killing of most wanted Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant Noor Mohammad Tantray was a success for the security forces and a major setback for the militant group.

"Indian Army's 50 RR and police task force Awantipora laid a siege of Samboora village at 11pm on Monday which led to a gunfight with Jaish-e-Muhammad resulting in martyrdom of two mujahideen", the militant outfit said. The 47-year-old Noor Mohammad Tantray aka Noora Trali, a resident of Tral in south Kashmir had joined the group in July this year according to the reports.

Security forces further tightened the Cordon in the village, they said adding exchange of fire continued till 0400 hrs on Tuesday. However, Tantray was only three feet tall and was reported to be behind the recent attacks in the Kashmir valley.

He was also involved in the grenade attack carried on State PWD Minister Naeem Akhtar's cavalcade in Tralon 21 September. There was input about presence of 2/3 terrorists near NHW planning to attack convoy.

Tantray's death is seen as a big blow for the JeM.

"No one would suspect him to be a terrorist and that is why Jaish recruited him as an over-ground worker", a police officer told NDTV.

An official said that the searches are going on in the area. SP Vaid, Director General of police, said that Noora and his associates were planning to attack a convoy on Srinagar-Jammu highway.

This information was developed further and it was in this course that we came to know of the presence of a most wanted JeM militant, who was the mastermind of nearly all attacks carried out by JeM, was hiding in Samboora.

"Noor was a convict; a case was registered against him in 2003 and he was released on parole after which he became a very strong OGW of JeM".

Local media said that Tantray had become "a headache" for police after he jumped parole and took control of JeM south and central Kashmir.
