Magic Leap Unveils AR Goggles

After a really long time of waiting, Magic Leap surprised their fans for christmas by unveiling its augmented reality goggles - Magic Leap One.

The Magic Leap One is a developer headset that consists of some still impressively slim goggles that attach to a Sony diskman size power pack via a cord and can be controlled with an oversized Apple TV remote type handheld.

But let's actually look at what the news is: Magic Leap has published a website with pictures that show a nice-looking man with a goggle-like headset over his eyes, carrying a bulbous remote. Magic Leap Chief Executive Rony Abovitz told Rolling Stone that Lightpack is similar in power to a MacBook Pro or an Alienware gaming PC. The Magic Leap One is likely to be one of many products in the pipeline as the company has filed more than 100 patents.

The glasses contain six cameras, with creators suggesting the headset be used for web shopping, browsing, for entertainment, and other uses. It uses lightfield photonics to generate digital light at different depths and blend seamlessly with natural light to produce lifelike digital objects that coexist in the real world. We are more of a premium artisanal computer, " suggesting we are nearly certainly talking about several thousand dollars.

Magic Leap content ranges from games to music experiences to Oculus Connect-like digital collaborations so far, and these are being billed as "just a jumping-off point" for creators. The technology is created to interact with "multiple input modes including voice, gesture, head pose and eye tracking". "That was the key idea".

But you can't get away with using Magic Leap One without this spatial computing platform. Also in early 2018, the Creator Portal will be opened up, offering access to the software development kit, which will include tools, documentation, and learning resources.

On the Magic Leap One's official website, we're unfortunately largely treated to pompous and vague taglines and "features" like "designed for discovery", "persistent objects", "high powered chipset", "next generation interface" and "displays on demand".

Magic Leap didn't mention a price in Wednesday's announcement, but people close to the company have previously said to expect it to cost between $1,000 and $1,500. The Florida-based firm has been known to be working on mixed-reality technology of some sort - the kind of thing that prompts all who try it to trip over themselves trying to find ways of describing it - but that's about it.

For years, Magic Leap has raised astronomical rounds of funding from the likes of Google and Alibaba, Fidelity and JP Morgan.
