Isaiah Thomas to take part in 5-on-5 scrimmages in Canton

Isaiah Thomas to take part in 5-on-5 scrimmages in Canton

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, he is targeting a comeback in the first week of January.

Thomas hasn't played in a game since suffering a torn labrum in his right hip while playing for the Celtics in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals last season, though he started 3-on-3 work at practice late last month.

According to McMenamin, that day is coming sooner than later. The Cavs are hoping to find a way for Thomas to scrimmage with their G-League affiliate, the Canton Charge, multiple team sources told ESPN. Part of the reason for that is Cleveland, a veteran-laden team that has reeled off 18 victories in its past 19 games, rarely practices.

Thomas has yet to practice in a 5-on-5 full-court set up by the Cavs, partly because the league's oldest team does not practice as often as other teams do.

"Following the Warriors game, the Cavs play the Sacramento Kings on December 27, and then they have a one-day retreat planned in Napa, California, after that contest, which one source close to Thomas described as a "nice environment" for the two-time All-Star to "get ready" to play his first game". McMenamin noted that a source said that Thomas won't play at all in any games before Christmas.

A few days ago, there were some rumors regarding Isaiah Thomas' return [VIDEO].

Given his flair for the dramatic, and just how personal he took this entire transaction (especially from Ainge), there's no doubt that Thomas would love the chance to make his comeback in Boston, and flex on Ainge's squad for another Cavs win in the season head-to-head series.

Cleveland plays the at home on January 2, followed by the Boston Celtics on the road January 3.

That makes it hard for a player returning from injury to get some real game-like run in, which is where the G-League should come in.
