The messages read "This is my last farewell", "Things have been so hard", "Please let me go and say I did a good job", prompting his sister to make an emergency call to the police.

The Associated Press reported on Monday that Jonghyun's sister told police that the singer sent her text messages reading "Final farewell" and "I've had difficulties" prior to the discovery of his body, though authorities have not yet determined a cause of death.

Kim Jong-Hyun, a lead singer of SHINee, one of South Korea's top K-pop boybands, died on Monday, police said, in what appears to be a suicide.

Kim, better known by his stage name Jonghyun, was found unconscious at a residence hotel and was pronounced dead later at a nearby hospital.

Investigators believe he died from inhaling toxic fumes, as they discovered coal briquettes burnt on a frying pan upon arriving at the apartment. In one message, The Guardian reports Jonghyun wrote, "Please let me go". In 2015, Jonghyun launched a successful solo career and collaborated with several other Korean artists. They released six chart-topping albums in Korea and five in Japan, in addition to embarking on numerous world tours.

Jonghyun fronted Korean boy band SHINee. Kim's last public appearance was at his solo concert, titled "Inspired", from December 9-10 in Seoul. "I'm heartbroken and devastated by the news".
