Deputy PM criticizes U.S. for veto on United Nations resolution condemning Jerusalem decision

"We also call on all political leaders to encourage everyone to refrain from violence; it is only in a peaceful situation that the chances of peace will be maximised", he said.

Last time the United States used its right to veto in February 2011 when the UN Security Council considered a draft resolution concerning Israel's settlement activity on the occupied Palestinian territories.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, for his part, strongly attacked the United States and accused it of supporting Zionist work in Palestine since its inception.

A series of Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2334, made stipulations on the issue of Jerusalem.

He will discuss in Paris the establishment of an worldwide mechanism to replace the United States as a mediator for the peace process, based on the French initiative previous year, which culminated in a peace conference attended by 25 foreign ministers from Arab and European countries and the United States, but issued a statement without clear mechanisms or a time limit.

In an effort to keep Washington from exercising its veto power, the text did not mention the United States by name, saying instead it "deeply regrets recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem".

He called on the global community to adhere to relevant Security Council resolutions and strengthen their efforts for the resumption of negotiations in order to find a solution to key issues, including the final status of Jerusalem.

The draft resolution was circulated among UN Security Council members last week.

Key US allies Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Ukraine were among the 14 countries in the 15-member council that backed the measure asserting that any decisions on the status of Jerusalem "have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded".

Every Jew on earth - in fact, every decent person on earth - should be applauding the fact that President Trump called out the decades-long charade - and failure - of the Middle East "peace process". "The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy", she said.

With the Palestinians rejecting US mediation, Russian Federation said it was ready to take over.

The veto cast by US Ambassador Nikki Haley highlights Washington's isolation over Trump's Jerusalem announcement. "The worldwide community must work now to protect the Palestinian people".

The resolution was promptly vetoed by the United States.

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent state.

Abbas emphasized that the Palestinian Authority would resort to the UN General Assembly for the adoption of a set of resolutions, and said in this context that the PA would deploy all efforts in order to get full membership.

Palestine's Hamas group said in a written statement that Jerusalem is Palestine's capital forever, and decisions of the US and Israel would not change this fact.
