Knifeman shot at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport

"Man shot by the military police at Schiphol Airport after he threatened [people] with a knife", the force said on Twitter.

Tom Boelen, general manager of the next door restaurant Per Tutti, said he was told by his staff that there was a shooting happening.

In a tweet, the Marechaussee police service says the "situation is safe" and the suspect has been detained and removed from the scene.

"He was shot in the leg and taken to hospital in Amsterdam".

"Man at Schiphol shot at by the military police, after he made threats with a knife".

GUNSHOTS can be heard ringing out across Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport in chilling video of the moment armed cops shot a knifeman threatening to stab holidaymakers. Air traffic was not affected.

Opened in 1916 as a military airport, Schiphol became the country's primary airport in 1949, lying just about nine kilometers (five miles) southwest of Amsterdam.

It has since been reopened with officials reporting no further delays to flights.

Schiphol is one of Europe's top five busiest airports and handled more than 60 million passengers past year.

It serves as the second main hub for Air France-KLM, and also hosts many budget airlines such as Transavia and EasyJet.

The emergency prompted the authorities to evacuate part of Schiphol, one of Europe's busiest airports.
